Understanding what your business needs next
Sometimes, you can follow EVERY recommended strategy, complete every task, and make every “this should work” adjustment… and yet your business still does not move forward the way you expected.
And when that happens, it’s SO easy to think: “I just need a better plan… a new strategy… another program…”
But what if the real issue is not strategy at all?
Before leaving for vacation, I had a really grounding conversation with Dr. Heather Tucker about exactly this idea – what might actually be going on when your business feels stuck, even though you are doing “all the right things.”
“What if it’s not that you need MORE strategy… but that something deeper is asking to be noticed?”
A conversation rooted in shared experience
Dr. Heather Tucker and I both work with coaches, although our approaches are different. We originally connected through the Soulfulpreneur Summit, where I presented a session called:
“Are you a seeker, builder, or survivor in your business?”
That session came from interviews I had done with coaches at approx midlevel (5-15ish years experience.). I wanted to understand what is REALLY happening beneath the surface when things are not progressing as planned.
And one question kept coming up again and again:
Is this actually a strategy problem… or something deeper influencing how the strategy is being used?
Looking beyond business strategy
Business advice is often very visible and very action-focused:
- Post more consistently
- Improve your offer
- Build a funnel
- Refine your message
- Fix your sales process
And yes, those things can help.
But they do not always address what is happening internally.
You might have a solid plan and still struggle to implement it.
You might KNOW what to do and still second-guess every step.
You might be working hard… but operating from exhaustion, pressure, or survival mode.
And in those moments, another strategy is not the answer.
The more important question becomes:
WHAT is influencing how you are showing up for the strategy you already have?
Are you seeking, building, or surviving?
This framework is a simple way to understand your current relationship with your business.
A seeker is often in “WHAT’S NEXT?” mode – always learning, always searching, always collecting the next course, coach, or system. It feels productive… but making a commitment is really hard.
A builder is actively creating. Systems, offers, relationships, momentum. This stage requires consistency, patience, and the willingness to move forward even when things are not 100% certain.
A survivor is in “just get through this” mode. You are reacting, managing urgency, and trying to keep everything afloat. Even small decisions can feel heavy.
And here is the key: none of these are bad.
You are not “stuck” in one forever. You move between them depending on capacity, season, and life circumstances.
Ask more revealing questions
In my conversation with Dr. Tucker, we explored questions that go deeper than strategy.
Instead of immediately asking, “What should I do next?” try asking:
- What am I avoiding because it feels uncomfortable?
- Am I collecting more information when I already know enough to act?
- Is my plan realistic for my actual time and energy right now?
- Am I making decisions from clarity… or from fear and urgency?
- Do I need a new strategy, or do I need support implementing the one I already have?
Because here is the truth:
Sometimes the issue is NOT tactical. It is internal.
Listen to the full conversation
My interview with Dr. Heather Tucker goes deeper into what it really means to feel “stuck” even when you are doing everything right.
As you listen, ask yourself:
Am I a seeker, builder, or survivor right now?
And more importantly… What is that telling me about what I need next?
