The seasonal mindset that keeps your calendar full and your work flowing
I was speaking with a powerful and well known mentor coach the other day. He has been in the coaching world for many years, so I asked him a question I often ask experienced professionals:
What do you believe most often gets in the way when
coaches are growing their business?
His answer was something I learned years ago, and many lessons are timeless.
As our businesses grow, we must remember to keep planting seeds.
The garden metaphor entrepreneurs need
Think about a garden.
If we harvest the vegetables but never plant new seeds for the next season, eventually the garden produces very little. Maybe nothing at all.
Businesses work in a very similar way.
The mentor I spoke with shared a story about a time when someone in his family became ill. When he stepped away to deal with that situation and later returned to work, his calendar was nearly empty.
Why?
>> Because while he was harvesting before, there had been no seeds planted for the next cycle. <<
It’s a POWERFUL reminder.
Doing and sowing at the same time
This is easier said than done.
When business gets busy, it’s natural to focus on serving the clients already in front of us. The work fills our time and energy.
But the rhythm of business requires two things happening at once:
Doing and sowing.
Doing and sowing.
Doing and sowing.
Doing and sowing.
Serving your clients while also planting the seeds that will grow into your next opportunities.
Following the seasons of energy
After 17 years in business (which still amazes me) I’ve become increasingly interested in working with natural cycles.
I like to follow the seasons.
Winter, for example, is often about reflection and intention. It’s the time when we think carefully about the seeds we want to plant.
Spring is different.
Spring is when things begin to move. Energy returns. Ideas start to sprout. Action becomes more visible.
Right now we are approaching that shift.
The days are getting longer. The sun is out more. The energy is building.
Today is the first day of Daylight Savings Time in the Eastern US time zone!
Your reminder for this season
Wherever you are in your business right now, remember the rhythm.
Sowing and reaping.
Sowing and reaping.
Sowing and reaping.
The seeds you plant today are what keep your calendar alive tomorrow.
