How slowing down in winter helps you take more aligned action in spring
March in New Hampshire has a personality of its own. One day you see patches of bare ground and sunshine, and the next day the wind reminds you that winter is not quite finished yet.
For me, that shifting energy is exactly what makes March so interesting.
We often hear “in like a lion, out like a lamb,” and it captures the experience perfectly. March can feel windy, unsettled, and full of movement. And when you think about wind, you think about energy that moves around quickly.
That same movement shows up in our lives and businesses.
Some days feel calm and clear. Other days feel like energetic storms. When you are in the middle of that storm, you might not even notice it. Only afterward do you step back and realize how much was happening beneath the surface.
And then, after the storm passes, there is a sense of calm again.
Your business is connected to your inner rhythm
Entrepreneurs often try to separate their work life from their personal life. But for service-based entrepreneurs, especially coaches and consultants, that separation is rarely clean.
You are your work.
That does not mean you work all the time. But it does mean your capacity to do your Great Work is directly tied to how you are doing internally.
If you are exhausted, overwhelmed, or disconnected from yourself, your business will feel that. If you are grounded, regulated, and aligned, your business feels that too. This is why paying attention to your own rhythms matters so much.
Supporting yourself, resting, reflecting, and growing are not luxuries. They are essential parts of building a sustainable business.
Why winter reflection matters before spring action
In the Sacred Spiral program, we spend the first quarter of the year in what I call “wintering.”
Wintering is a time for slowing down enough to actually hear yourself.
During this season, the women in the program begin to notice their natural rhythms. They regulate their nervous systems. They slow down enough to reconnect with what they truly need.
Almost no one comes to coaching saying they want to “unconditionally accept themselves.” What they say is that they want more clients, more income, more freedom, and a business that feels easier.
But the internal work often comes first.
When people slow down and reconnect with themselves, something powerful happens. They begin planting the seeds that will eventually support aligned action.
And aligned action produces results much more easily.
Planting seeds before the season of action
Spring is naturally a time of forward movement:
- Ideas start forming.
- Energy rises.
- Plans begin to take shape.
But when you move directly into action without reflection, you often end up busy rather than effective.
When you first gather your seeds (your ideas, your intentions, your goals) and clarify what you actually want, the actions that follow are far more powerful.
You know where you are going.
You know why it matters.
And the next steps become clearer.
An invitation to step into spring with intention
As winter winds down, I will be hosting an open workshop called Spring Into Action on April 13.
During this two-hour workshop, we will focus on getting clear about what you truly want, why it matters, and what your next steps should be.
You will gather your ideas, understand your direction, and walk away with actionable steps you can begin implementing immediately.
For some people, that workshop is the perfect starting point. Not everyone is ready to commit to a full year of deep work. Sometimes the most important step is simply beginning – breaking through the ice and taking the first small action. And that is often all it takes to start moving forward again.
As we move from the end of winter into the beginning of spring, allow the storms, embrace the quiet, and stay connected to your own rhythm.
