What one weekend taught me about energy, health, and sustainable success.
I love my family deeply. They matter to me more than anything, and when they need me – especially my aging parents with their significant needs – I’m there. That’s part of who I am, and it’s a value I hold dear.
But even the most meaningful commitments can take a toll. Over a recent four-day stretch, I was traveling, running errands, helping with logistics, and always on alert. My nervous system was in overdrive, and my sleep suffered. I found myself awake for hours in the middle of the night, night after night.
The moment I knew I had to stop
By Sunday, my brain started to short-circuit. I wanted to take everyone out on the beautiful lake where I live, but I knew I didn’t have the energy to do it well. Instead, I suggested we all rest. Later that day, we enjoyed a boat ride together – recharged and more present. IT WAS THE BEST PART OF THE WEEKEND.
Two things can be true at the same time:
- I cherish these moments
- My parents suck the life out of me
The truth is, my body was sending clear signals: “Slow down now, or I will slow you down.”

The recovery curve is real
It took until Tuesday for my nervous system to settle enough for me to sleep soundly again. That’s a long time to feel “off” in your business and your life. When you’re running on empty, not only can you not do your best work – you’re putting your health and your business at risk.
Why this matters for your business
If you own your business, you don’t have the luxury of running yourself into the ground. In your 30s, you might be able to push through. In your 40s, maybe still. But by your 50s, your body pushes back hard.
The sooner you respect your limits and honor your recovery needs, the longer and better you’ll be able to do the work you love – without burning out.
Your next step to level up without burnout
On September 8, from 11 AM to 1 PM Eastern, I’m hosting a small-group workshop for just 10 people: Level Up Without Burning Out. This is a pre-sell, and as I write this, there are only 7 spots left.
We’ll talk about real strategies for managing your energy, setting boundaries, and building success without exhaustion.
