Moving beyond obligation and back toward yourself

Creating space for the decisions, rhythms, and changes that are already waiting underneath the surface

Creating space for the decisions, rhythms, and changes that are already waiting underneath the surface

We live in a world that expects answers quickly: we want the decision, the result, the breakthrough, the plan… Preferably by Tuesday!

But when we are talking about REAL change, particularly the kind of change that affects how we work, how we live, and how we see ourselves, we know something else is true:

Transformation takes time.

Not necessarily years. But it does require enough space for what is underneath the surface to actually come forward.

I have been thinking about this a lot as I prepare to host a small, four-day retreat for women in my program.

Before you think this is going to turn into a sales pitch, it isn’t.

The retreat is full.

What I want to talk about instead is WHY I believe spending several days doing this work together can create a different kind of result than trying to squeeze the same conversations into scattered Zoom calls and patched-together hours.

Some decisions are already happening before we consciously make them

Most of us have things sitting quietly in the back of our minds.

They are not always full decisions yet.

Maybe you know you want to leave your job, but you have not completely stepped into that decision.

Maybe you are preparing to start a business and there is an enormous amount of mental noise between you and the thing you say you want.

Maybe you know your schedule is not working anymore, but you keep trying to make yourself fit inside it.

The answers may already be developing.

But there is friction.

And when we create enough uninterrupted space to look honestly at what is creating that friction, decisions can start becoming easier.

Because we can finally HEAR ourselves.

What are the hidden agreements keeping you where you are?

One of the things we will explore during the retreat is what I sometimes think of as hidden contracts.

These are the promises, beliefs, expectations, and obligations we may be carrying without even realizing how strongly they are influencing us.

A hidden contract might say:

I have to keep everyone happy.

I have to stay because leaving would disappoint someone.

I have to prove that I can do everything myself.

I can rest once the work is finished.

And, of course, the work is NEVER finished.

Some of these agreements may have served us beautifully at another point in our lives.

But that does not mean they still belong in the life or business we are creating now.

Building a life that actually works for YOU

This also shows up in something as practical as your calendar.

Can you design a schedule that honors your dedication to your business while ALSO honoring your health, your relationships, your family, and your need for rest?

Some people call that balance.

I think of it differently.

I think it is about intentionally deciding what is actually good for you.

Because if your business succeeds while every other part of your life becomes depleted, we should probably question our definition of success.

The goal is not to perfectly divide your life into equal pieces.

The goal is to build rhythms that allow you to show up for what matters without constantly fighting yourself.

Obligation has a purpose, but it cannot be the whole story

We walk through a tremendous amount of our lives in obligation.

We are responsible for clients.

Employees.

Partners.

Families.

Bills.

Commitments.

There is nothing inherently wrong with obligation.

It has a beautiful purpose.

But when obligation becomes the primary force directing our lives, we can slowly lose contact with who we actually are.

What do YOU want?

What gives you energy?

What kind of business are you really trying to build?

What would your life look like if every decision were not filtered through what you think you are supposed to do?

Those are difficult questions to answer when your normal life is constantly tapping you on the shoulder.

Sometimes you need enough distance to see what you could not see before

There will only be five of us at this retreat.

It will be intimate.

We will talk deeply. We will support one another. We will move. We will rest. We will eat together. We will laugh.

And we will create enough space to notice some of the things we have been walking past in our everyday lives.

That is the part I find so exciting.

Because often the barrier between where you are and where you say you want to go is not another productivity system.

It is not another strategy.

It is not another piece of information.

Sometimes the work is understanding the part of you that is quietly resisting the change you consciously want.

When that resistance begins to loosen, your business decisions can change.

Your relationships can change.

Your schedule can change.

And YOU can begin to feel like yourself again.

If this resonates with you, particularly if you are trying to grow your business but keep feeling some invisible friction pulling you backward, I would love to have a conversation.

You may want to learn about future retreats, you may simply have questions, or you may be curious about the work I do with entrepreneurs.

We might work together.

We might not.

Either way, sometimes a good conversation is the beginning of seeing something differently.
