From dirt to meaning: The Beacon of Light Center project
This is the moment when landscape architecture meets mission driven work.
Please witness the beginning of the outer manifestation of the Beacon of Light Center.
What began as a collage in 2017 has developed into a home I now own and a rebranding and an LLC in 2021/2022.
In 2025, the outside will begin to match the inside. This land sculpture will physically express the Beacon of Light Center’s logo, values, and future gathering space.
The idea: A spiral you can stand in
Instead of keeping my logo on paper or a screen, I wanted people to be able to walk it, feel it, and gather around it. So we’re shaping the earth into a low, walkable spiral that will rise above the grade of the surrounding earth. Seen from above, it will mirror the Beacon of Light Center emblem. Up close, it becomes a place for ceremony, teaching and learning, play, and connection.
Spirals show up in nature everywhere – galaxies, shells, whirlpools, the unfurling of ferns. They represent unfolding, growth, movement from inner vision to outer expression (and back again). For us, the spiral grounds four directional “arms” that symbolically connect to the four corners of the earth – and to four aspects we lean on in community work: blood (effort), sweat (labor), love (relationship), and light (purpose). For the key people at Beacon of Light, we add “dancing,” because joy belongs in healing and in life.
From idea to earth: Building with love
Every step of this project is fueled by passion and care. As Michael, a key member of the Beacon of Light Center, placed the last shovel of dirt to shape the spiral’s foundation, we were reminded that this is more than just landscaping. It’s a living piece of art that embodies our values.
